Maxwell Drops Some Newness Via Unheard Tracks On New EPs

by amc

I’ve been holding on to this one for a minute now. I wanted to actually have time to sit down, take it all in and share a bit with the vibes.

I heard about this when it dropped at the end of March and I was ecstatic. Even though I’m more than ready for new music from Maxwell, I’ll take this.

Do you remember the day you heard “…Til The Cops Come Knocking?” I was in New York visiting family and my favourite pastime was to tune into WBLS. I can’t even explain to you the feeling I felt when this song washed over the airwaves and hit me for the first time. The bass being strung with no mercy, accompanied by the sultry and sexy wah’s. It was a sonic venture that took us back to 80s slow jam tapes and late night conversations. The video was sensual with Maxwell slithering on the checkered carpet with that alluring smirk, telling his naturalista beauty exactly what he had planned while making our souls flutter to his falsetto. And the lyrics? Man, the lyrics.

Didn’t you dig the way
I rubbed yo back, girl?
Wasn’t it cool when first
I kissed yo lips?
Was it enough to penetrate yo dark world?
Or were you embarrassed
About the way you freaked?

If that and the rest of what transpired in room 508 didn’t do it to you, I don’t know what will. I literally had to get my hands on that album before I left NYC. I believe I made my way down to Beat Street to pick up my copy and that was the day my love for this man’s music and artistry began.

Fast forward to 2019 and Maxwell is still doing his thing. Nearly 23 years later, Maxwell gives us a new package of unheard tracks from his debut album in the form of 5 EPs. He revisits some of our favourites from Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite in the form of “…Til the Cops Come Knockin,’” “The Urban Theme,”“Sumthin’ Sumthin’,” “Whenever, Wherever, Whatever,” “Suitelady (The Proposal Jam)” and more on tap. The EPs will each have slow jams for your “Turn Off The Lights” playlist from B-sides, dubs, radio edits, instrumentals and versions from his MTV Unplugged stint. And on top of that, he released a new short but sweet tune called “Shame” for your aural stimulation.

I’m a bonafide Maxwell fan. I have been from jump. He’s one of the artists whom I will ride with until I’m thoroughly disappointed and it hasn’t happened as yet (even though Black summers’ night didn’t fully do it for me). Besides the fact that we share the same birthday (#GeminiSeason soon come!) you already know that I have his back and anticipate everything he has yet to release for our aural stimulation.
