Getting Operatic With Musetta’s Musical Story Time

by amc

Hey Soulsters!

GUESS WHO’S BACK!

I know, it’s been a minute, but I’m here to share in the vibes—as per usual.

Now, this one is new for me. While I’m usually the one delivering the goods on soul and indie soul, this was a curveball for me. So, let me preface this post by saying I’m not a huge opera fan, but I do enjoy a little bit here and there.

And truth be told, you do too! Some people are not even aware that some of their favourite classical pieces either derive from or are a part of an operatic piece somewhere along the way – for instance “The Barber of Seville,” “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and “The Flower Duet” to name a few. For a while now, pieces like those I’ve mentioned have piqued my interest in opera. I’ve been longing to attend an opera for the longest time and I intend to get it off my list as soon as Sugar Plum is of age.

Speaking of Sugar Plum, this project came through my inbox and of course, he was the first little person I thought of.

Meet international opera singer, Broadway performer, elementary school teacher and children’s book author, Dr. Lori Brown Mirabal. Using her dynamic opera skills, she put together this dope aural collection of stories and opera songs. Now, something like this I have never heard of, so I was a little apprehensive upon pressing play.  However, it was really cool when I gave it a listen, and Sugar Plum listened attentively when I turned it on for him before bedtime.

Dr. Mirabal’s operatic release has been submitted to NARAS for Grammy consideration and she also has a performance date performing her play With Warmest Regards on October 1st at Theatre Row as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival.

Thanks to Dr. Mirabal, I have a few of the tracks for your listening pleasure. Please listen to them in the following order below:

For my fellow Mom’s reading this, I know you’re definitely up on storytime, so try these out with your little one! My boy liked it and I’m sure you’re little one will enjoy the soothing sounds as well.
