Randomness: Soca, Maiysha And A Mix

by amc

Hello, my peoples!  Guess who has shown up to grace her pages this week?  Are you cursing me yet?  This week has been a ROUGH one, sociably, to say the least.  I know you are laughing and thinking – REALLY NOW LADY?  Is there really such thing? My response to your preposterous question – YES! LOL  So I figured to forgo Old School Friday today and give you a summary of my past week. Because as I am sure you know, music is always involved in my escapades!

Beginning with Monday – the West Indian Day Parade (jump up, carnival etc) on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn was INSANE!  This was one weekend, where I didn’t want to hear any soul, r&b, hip hop or reggae. It was all about calypso and soca. I was able to meet up with good friends of mine, whom I haven’t seen in a minute and are newlyweds.  It was great to spend time with them while they were here. Unbeknownst to me, we ended up playing in a band and I jumped, waved, caused trouble and whined my way down that Parkway from beginning to end in my yellow short shorts and St. Lucian colours. I jumped on a truck and bruised the side of my leg (it’s still swollen), jumped off the truck and pulled something, bruised my shoulder trying to get through a hole in one of the barricades and needless to say, my feet were desensitized by the end of the adventures.  I had to result to taking an epsom salts bath on Tuesday morning.  Couldn’t even head over to Highline to resume my biweekly Roots fix.  And because of that, I missed the lady featured below.  ALL OF THIS, FOR THE LOVE OF SOCA!!  Next year, I am planning on playing Mas. We shall see how buff I can get by then!

With that said, I know I was going to take it easy for the week. So Wednesday night, I headed to The Living Room to hear the beautiful Maiysha do her thing. I will say this again and these words do not come lightly: every single time I see this woman perform, I am in awe. Powerful, melancholy, intense and euphoric are just a few words I can use to describe this powerhouse’s instrument.  It was an acoustic set and Maiysha sang tracks off of her debut album This Much Is True. My standouts being “You Don’t Know” and “Hold Me” – both evoked goosebumps beyond compare. I sigh, close my eyes and go to a place with those two tracks on the album.  Yes, they are my favourites.  Maiysha’s covers of U2’s “With Or Without You” left some breathless, while Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone” was out of control. I still remain speechless.  If you want to actually take it in and not just take my word for it, please check her out during her residency at The Living Room. Maiysha will be there every Wednesday in September, serving it up, as her own personal cocktail hour (as she said).  And believe when I say, the hour, like a good drink, is served up strong and you will be craving for more. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

I thought I would use this pic because it’s one of my favs! 🙂 I LOVE fashion and tonight was the night to be out and about the city!  It is Fashion Week after all!  My favourite beauty blogger and gal pal Afrobella is in NYC and we did it up tonight in Soho for Fashion Night Out.  It was quite a soiree!  Everyone decked out and took to the streets to check out the stores, do some shopping and grab free swag and drinks.  Every store I passed had a magnificent soundtrack of sorts playing. House, 80’s pop (“Electric Avenue” by Eddie Grant had me bobbing) and electro.  I was in my glee!  Soho was alive! I scored BIG TYME at the Lancome counter at Bloomingdales, with a fabulous makeup artist.  I can’t remember his name but I do know his make up was fiercer than mine on any day. Being the doll that he was and the chocolate shake that I am (LOL), he gave me a fresh new vile of the now SOLD OUT limited black lip gloss that Lancome carried. It looks absolutely stunning on these lips!  How happy was I!!  From there, I had dinner at Bar 89with a bevy of beauty bloggers (I am so going back), and then ended up at Purple Lab dishing it up with the fashionable and phenomenal Karen R0binovitz (of Huge Lips, Skinny Hips fame and Purple Lab).  AND I met someone who I believe will be Minxing me up very soon!!  I will let y’all know how that goes!

Tomorrow is another full day of running around, but I am so looking forward to Saturday night. I don’t even have to say anything, just read the flyer and come out!

No vid today, I think you’ve had enough!  Please be sure to check out my OSF fam here. 🙂
