Union Events Presents: Melanie Fiona in Toronto

by amc

The last time I saw Grammy® Award winner Melanie Fiona was in New York City in 2006 at one of my favourite stomping grounds – SOB’s. When I tell you this woman gives a great show. I was compelled to head backstage to hail her up and get some Toronto chat in. Melanie has the most lively and energetic vibes on stage. That year her show hit #1 as the best concert that I attended when I compiled my year-end Top 5 list of concerts. It was a sold-out extravaganza, with Melanie strutting across the stage and belting out tracks from her phenomenal album The Bridge like the inspirational “Ay Yo,”  the passionate “It Kills Me,” and other tracks like her cover of Kanye’s “Heartless.”

On Friday, May 3rd, 2013 at The Phoenix, Melanie will be back home for her very first headline show, along with special guests Charlie Red. With all of the goodness, there’s an amazing cause attached to the show as well. $1 from each ticket sold will go towards The Remix Project – programs and services geared towards youth who are trying to enter the creative industries or further their formal education. Fantastic. No doubt, it is going to be a concert that will have people talking for a time to come. To add to The Bridge, Melanie now has The MF Life, yet another fantastic album, and a pretty impressive catalogue of collaborations and such. I’m looking forward to covering the show and watching the Toronto native do her thing. I believe she will be coming through to mash up the place and break it down, so it can remain forever and consistently broken.

The review will be up over on Soultracks.com for your viewing pleasure. You know I will let you know once it’s live.
