Tis the season and all, so why not give away a pair of tickets to a Soulafrodisiac #eventapproved show coming up on Wednesday, December 9th at Drake Underground? Hip hop hitters Illa J and Spek Won are being brought to you live and direct by Toronto’s new online radio station iliveradio.com – bringing you your favs in hip hop, indie soul, house and more. Now, I don’t give away hip hop tickets over here like that (even though I am a serious hip hop head), but it’s always great to keep y’all guessing and switch it up a bit now and then.
Let’s lay down some stats about the two MC’s on deck – Detroit’s own Illa J and Toronto’s son Spek Won.
Illa J: John Derek Yancey, better known as “Illa J” is an emcee /singer/multi-instrumentalist and younger brother of the late hiphop artist J Dilla. A former member of the hip hop group, Slum Village, the Detroit native relocated to Montreal in 2014 and collaborated with some of Canada’s finest emcees and producers including Moka Only, Potatohead People and Kaytranada.
Spek Won: When asked what two words best describe who he is, and who he wants to be in the future, Benjamin Nii Kpani Addy’s response is “Spektaularly Wonderful”. It’s from this affirmation that the versatile Ghanaian Canadian rap artist takes his name Spek Won. The Torontobased “Afroentrepreneur” who released his debut album Sofaking Amazing earlier this year, is also the architect of HipLIfe a movement that fuses African high life with hiphop and Afrofunk. I’ve seen him in concert, and he does not play, y’all.
