Happy New Year, Soulsters!
Believe it or not, I rung in the new year with a bug of some sort—aches and pain, fever and stuffy nose. Well, better to get it out of my system now because I have a movie to see!
I made an announcement last Friday that this week I would be celebrating the historic and amazing story of Hidden Figures. As you know, the movie is being released this Friday, January 6th (you can find showtimes and movie theatres here) and we need to head out in droves to support. Not only is it about black girl magic, but these black women embodied brains and talent to assist in a huge project that would change the world forever at a time where it was a constant battle to be seen or heard simply because of the colour of your skin. Here is a synopsis about the story:
Hidden Figures is based on a best-selling non-fiction book written by Margot Lee Shetterly about three amazing Black women at NASA in the Sixties whose math calculations helped the first American astronaut make a complete orbit around the Earth in 1962. The film recounts the story of the African-American mathematician Katherine Johnson and her two colleagues, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, who, while working in the segregated West Area Computers division of Langley Research Center, helped NASA catch up in the Space Race. Using their calculations, John Glenn became the first American astronaut to make a complete orbit of the Earth. The movie stars Taraji P. Henson, Academy Award® winner Octavia Spencer and singer-songwriter extraordinaire Janelle Monae.
